Empty box trailers, curtain-siders, and container chassis act like massive sails when encountering high crosswinds (exceeding 60 km/h). Strong gusts can effortlessly push a heavy rig out of its lane or tip it over entirely on elevated bridges.
Action: Drivers should maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the steering wheel, expect sudden lateral shifts when passing mountain cuts, and increase the following distance from other vehicles. If gusts become dangerous, the vehicle must be parked safely at the nearest truck stop, facing into the wind if possible.
3. Extreme Ambient Heat and Thermal Management
Operating heavy trucks in tropical or desert environments puts immense thermal stress on the engine, transmission, and braking systems.
Action: Monitor the hub temperatures and tire pressures closely during mandatory rest stops. Never spray cold water directly onto overheated drum brakes, as the thermal shock will instantly crack the heavy iron castings. When descending steep gradients in high heat, rely strictly on low gear selection and auxiliary retarders to prevent brake fade.
4. Freezing Conditions and Traction Optimization
Ice and packed snow destroy tire friction coefficients, making stopping distances up to ten times longer than on dry roads.
Action: Smoothness is paramount. Every input—steering, throttle positioning, and braking—must be executed with absolute gradual precision. Drivers must check that their fifth-wheel jaw mechanism is completely clear of frozen ice chunk accumulation to ensure free articulation between the tractor and the semi-trailer.
